NJIT是一所公立研究性大学，是新泽西州纽瓦克市高校联盟中的一所。NJIT是新泽西州的科技大学，位于纽约大都会市区，从校园可步行至纽瓦克市中心。离纽约市9英里(14.5公里)，30分钟车程，校园有公共交通直接到达。
NJIT于1881年在当地的工业家和发明家的支持下成立，1884年以纽瓦克科技学校开放。最先成立的是工程学院，即Newark Colleges of Engineering;之后，建筑学院于1973年成立，现如今NJIT由五个学院以一个学校组成。
NJIT提供50个本科学位和78个硕士学位，由21个学术部门组成，其中，生物科学、历史、戏剧艺术与罗格斯大学是联合的，两所学校校园相邻。NJIT国际学生占20%，学生来自很多国家及民族。学校有很多出国学习的机会，包括延伸co-op，实习和服务的机会。2015-2016根据PayScale的薪资收入数据显示，NJIT工程学院全美排名第19位，在全美研究型大学中排名34位。
